01 Jan 14 realistic resolutions to help the planet in 2018
Happy New Year OLIOers!
January’s a time to make resolutions and clean up our act but resolving to change the world can seem like a daunting task. Don’t feel overwhelmed! Small steps can make a lasting impact. Here are some realistic resolutions to create a positive and sustainable 2018.
1. Invest in a Keepcup
2. Give back to your community
Volunteer at your local charity, donate to your local foodbank or support the small guys by shopping at your local, independent retailers.
3. Join the litterati
Pick up a piece of litter on your walk today. Download the Litterati app, tag your trash and join the global movement that’s cleaning up the planet.
4. Eat less meat
Agriculture is a significant driver of global warming. Reducing your meat intake to just one burger a week will result in the same environmental benefit as taking your car off the road for 320 miles!
5. Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products
The biggest impact of cleaning products comes from the toxic chemicals which they contain and the packaging they come in. The Natural Collection stock an assortment of eco-friendly cleaning and household products.
6. Say no to plastic straws
When it comes to helping the planet, most of us think nothing about using a little disposable straw. Americans alone use an estimated 500 million plastic straws daily, with most of them ending up in landfill. Go straw-free in 2018.
7. Buy less
A simple one that’s good for the planet and your wallet.
8. Bring lunch to work
9. Sign and share this petition
Get involved in some online activism by signing and sharing this petition which seeks to ban all non-recyclable/non-compostable packaging in the UK.
10. Avoid fast fashion
Did you know, the clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world, after oil? Dismiss ever-changing trends that encourage overconsumption and waste and invest in well-made items that last, or better yet buy second hand from your local charity shop.
11. Eat local
Reduce those air miles and support local. Sign up to a weekly veg box, shop at your local Food Assembly or farmers’ market or make an effort to check supermarket food labels.
12. Rethink your toiletries
Opt for green choices. Use natural and organic beauty products and toiletries with biodegradable packaging, invest in stainless steel razors and swap tampons and pads for an eco-friendly, toxin-free Mooncup.
13. Invest in a reusable water bottle
14. Share food on OLIO
And of course, share some of your post-Christmas food with a neighbour on OLIO or take it to the next level and become an OLIO volunteer.
Which resolution will you be taking on in 2018?
