How it works

Assess

We’ll have a conversation with you to assess your business’ food collection needs.

Recruit

We’ll recruit and train a team of volunteers who will collect your surplus food.

Collect

The volunteers will collect and redistribute your surplus to their neighbours using the OLIO app.

Impact

Your food ends up in bellies not bins. This benefits the community and environment, as well as reducing disposal costs and improving staff morale.

We’re the biggest food sharing app in the world with over 280,000 users.

“It was heartbreaking putting good food in the bin. With OLIO we are saving time and money as we are reducing our waste and paying less for our garbage collection.”

Alba, Manager of Sourced Market, London

“Its simplicity is the key to its success, connecting local people to share food they can’t use. The app has also encouraged people to try new foods too!”

Debbie Clark, manager of Sainsbury’s Waste Less, Save More campaign

FAQs

Q: What sort of business is appropriate?
A: Any business with surplus unsold food, which they do not want to go to waste.

Q: Does it matter how often I have surplus food available?
A: No! We can either provide a regular service with a daily/weekly rota of volunteers, who are connected to one another via group messaging to arrange any cover/holidays as required. Or you can let our volunteers know on an ad-hoc basis as and when you’ve got surplus food available for collection.

Q: What if I already have charitable collections in place?
Many of our partners have existing charitable partnerships in place and we collect food when charities are unable to.

Q: Do the FWHs have any training?
A: Together with the FSA and our Primary Authority we’ve developed a robust and easy-to-apply Food Safety Management System that all Food Waste Heroes adhere to. It’s easy to use yet sophisticated enough to ensure all types of food are distributed in a safe way.

Q: Is there any cost associated with the programme?
A: We offer all prospective clients a free pilot. Depending on the size of your business and your reporting requirements (# of meals saved, CO2 diverted, etc.), the service is either free or we charge a small fee to cover our operating costs (set up fee + from £2 per collection).

Q: Where is this available?
A: Currently our surplus food redistribution is available in the UK, Jersey, Sweden (Stockholm), USA (Bay Area, California). Guidance on setting up the FWH programme in other markets available upon request.
