FAQs

Q: What sort of food is appropriate?
A: Any food which is still good to eat. 🙂

Q: How does this work exactly?
All you need to do is send us all the details via form or phone call and we’ll organise a volunteer to pick up the food from the relevant address. It’s super simple! We also take ALL food, from hot meals to fresh items to packaged goods.

Q: Does it matter how little or how much food I have?
A: No! We can provide as many volunteers as you need. For most events, one or two volunteers are needed.

Q: How much notice do you need?
A: Ideally more than 4 hours notice. If it’s less than that please ring our Co-Founder Tessa on +44(0)7979572324 instead of filling out the form.

Q: Do the volunteers have food safety training?
A: We’ve developed a robust and easy-to-apply Food Safety Management System (FSMS) that all Food Waste Heroes adhere to. It’s easy to use yet sophisticated enough to ensure all types of food are distributed in a safe way. Our FSMS, which we created with input from the FSA, is approved by our Primary Authority and based on a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points study. Here is an overview on how Food Safety is ensured by volunteers on OLIO.

Q: Is there any cost associated with the pick ups?
A: No! Not for ad hoc collections.

Q: What if I already have charitable collections in place?
A: We collect food when charities are unable to.

Q: Where is this available?
A: Currently our surplus food redistribution is available in the UK, Jersey, Sweden (Stockholm), USA (Bay Area, California).
