15 Aug OLIO Stories: Dom from Nottingham
I gave an OLIO user some of the meat donations...she was so grateful she started crying on my doorstep. It just reminded me of the reason why I am so passionate about OLIO being a success.
Welcome to OLIO Stories, a series where we get to know people who share food on the app
First up is Dom from Nottingham. He is causing a food sharing storm, single-handedly encouraging businesses to share their food and promoting OLIO to the people in his community. Here is his inspiring story…
Hey Dom! How long you been using OLIO for and how did you find out about it?
I’ve been using it for 2 years now and I found out about it from Facebook.
How would you describe your first OLIO experience?
What kind of food do you usually save and how fast does it get picked up?
I usually save jacket potatoes, sandwiches and bread. They last no longer than 12 hours most of the time. Once we received 327 food donations from a polish shop and I gave away 3 cool bags of frozen meat in less than 2 hours after putting it in my freezer!
Are there any other benefits to using OLIO other than reducing food waste?
Friendships I have gained – real friends, not just “Facebook friends”.
What’s the most surprising thing about OLIO?
The amount of food I have seen my team saving and the amount of personal time my volunteers have sacrificed to attend meetings with myself and everyone else.
What’s your most memorable OLIO moment?
When I gave an OLIO user some of the meat donations we received. Since she was struggling to pay the bills, she was so grateful she started crying on my doorstep. It just reminded me of the reason why I am so passionate about OLIO being a success.
Has joining OLIO made you more knowledgeable about food waste, and has it helped you to be more aware about buying or throwing away food?
Not really because I knew it was a huge problem but I did not have the courage to do something about it until I realised how big the problem was in Nottingham.
If someone has downloaded OLIO, but hasn’t used it yet, what would you say to encourage them to use it?
Well, do you like free food? Do you want to change the world? Do you want to get to know your community? Then give OLIO a go! You will be very surprised with what you might find.
