It feels great to share with other people. And it feels great when people share with us.

Welcome again to OLIO Stories, a series where we get to know people who share food on the app!

Meet Leah and Richard from London. They share a passion for fighting food waste and they use OLIO as their weapon. Let’s hear their story…

Hello guys! First off, how does it work with the two of you – do you run the account together? Are you both passionate about fighting food waste?

Richard and I both run the account together, but I do most of the organising as he’s a little bit ham-fisted when it comes to technology! We are passionate about reducing all kinds of waste, not just food waste.

Is that what drew your attention to OLIO? Being able to contribute to reducing food waste?

We are avid Freecyclers. What appealed to us about OLIO is that it’s like Freecycle for food. We can give, we can take, and we reduce waste. A sustainable lifestyle isn’t just a ‘try it once and see’ kind of thing. You have to keep at it. So we did!

How does it feel to share with other people?

You can find these and maaaaany more items on OLIO! Some of Leah and Richard's listings: mask, cereal, hot chillies and cava🍾🌶

What is the most rewarding part of food (and non-food!) sharing?

Sharing is just nice. We get to meet people and learn about their lives. We now bump into some folks in the street and have made good acquaintances through OLIO. It’s better than a faceless supermarket, for sure. And it helps with the budgeting!

Most of the food you listed looks amazing! How come you decided to give it away?

Sometimes we buy too much food – either because something comes up which means we can’t eat it all in time or because we wanted to try something new and it just didn’t suit us. We don’t really drink, so when guests come over and leave booze, it’s best to give it away rather than leave it to create clutter. We also gave up eating meat – so much of what we gave away in February, for instance, was meaty. And when people come over for BBQs and leave meat, we have to give it away.

What’s your most memorable OLIO moment?

It was definitely seeing if we could give away some ovulation and pregnancy tests. It felt great helping another couple out like that because those are expensive.  And we always remember our bagel pick-ups. We have a bit of an obsession with bagels!

Who doesn’t though! Last question – if someone has downloaded OLIO, but hasn’t used it yet, what would you say to encourage them to use it?

Free food! Who doesn’t need free food?! 💚
